Every day, around 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans, and approximately 5000 pieces of marine plastic pollution have been found per mile of beach here in the UK! Plastic can take up to 1000 years to break down in the environment!
These pieces of plastic are deadly for marine wildlife when they mistake it for food, and it can cause blockages, pain and death. In seawater, plastic also absorbs dangerous chemicals. 1 in 3 fish that are caught for humans to eat contain plastic, so we could be consuming these cancer-causing chemicals.
Even for those who don’t eat fish, marine plants provide 70% of the oxygen we breathe, so we really need to start taking better care of it.
So what can you do to help with this problem?
Plastic bags cause over 100,000 marine animal deaths each year. By taking your own non-plastic bags when you shop you can help reduce this shocking number.
Secondly, use a reusable water bottle and coffee cup, rather than wastefully throwing them away each time.
Thirdly, steer clear of products than contain microbeads, though they are now banned in the UK as of January this year.
By making small simple changes in our attitude and lifestyle, we can really make a big difference to the well-being of our planet.
