African black soap is an all-natural soap made from plant-based ingredients found in Africa, and traditionally is free from dyes, fragrances and chemicals. Personally, I use it every night to cleanse my face and I swear by it – it noticeably improved my skin very quickly and I’ve used it ever since.
It contains natural antibacterial properties so is a great chemical-free cleanser. It may even remove more bacteria than standard cleansers, but is still gentle on the skin and suitable for both face and body.
It is also suitable for all skin types – I have dry, sensitive skin and I have found it to be very gentle. It helps to balance oils in the skin so can be used on oily or combination skin too.
Ingredients often include shea butter and oils, which work together to add moisture to the skin, while soothing dry skin and relieving itchiness. It may even be helpful for people suffering from eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, or other skin irritations. Additionally, it can provide a barrier on the skin against photoaging caused by sun exposure.
It also contains antioxidants which can help fight free-radicals, thus reducing signs of ageing and helping with inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea, as well as antimicrobial properties which may help to repair damaged cells – even helping to clear acne.
